MIDN 1/C Michael M. James was lost on June 23, 2021.
MIDN 1/C James was a graduate of McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Georgia and attended the Naval Academy Prep School in 2017. After arriving at the Naval Academy in 2018, he played linebacker on the Navy football team his Plebe year.
MIDN 1/C James was known for his loving and caring personality. His legacy will be remembered by everyone who was fortunate enough to cross paths with him. A classmate, 1/C Yenuel Rodriguez, described MIDN 1/C James with the following: “Myles was your brother, someone who always had your back and made sure that you knew it. He would remind you to celebrate every aspect of life and to look good while you did it.”
MIDN 1/C James was in 9th Company (later 19th Company) and planned to service select Marine Corps after graduation.

Midshipman 1st Class, M. Myles James, unexpectedly passed away on June 23, 2021, at his home in Hiram, Georgia. He was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, on September 8, 1998. His early childhood education was in Plainfield, NJ where he began his love for football. At the age of 12, he moved to Georgia and attended Campbell Middle School in Smyrna, Georgia. He graduated from McEachern High School with Honors in Powder Springs, Georgia, where he played both football and wrestled.
Upon high school graduation, Myles attended the Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS) before being selected for admission to the Naval Academy and reporting to Annapolis with the Class of 2022 in June of 2018. He was a member of the 9th Company (later 19th Company), an English major, and played football his plebe year. During his attendance at the Naval Academy Myles received The National Defense Medal.
Myles was loved, he was a kind and loving soul and brought joy and happiness to many. He especially loved spending time with family and friends. No one was a stranger to Myles. His outgoing spirit touched the lives of many.
Myles leaves to cherish his memories, his Mother Stacey Welch, his Uncle Linwood Welch, Jr., his siblings, J.C. Thomas III and Briana Thomas, and his grandparents, Linwood Sr and Alcenia Welch, two Great Aunts, Hilda Lightfoot and Saundra Phillips, godmother Michelle Burger and a host of cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his godfather, John Parrot, Jr.
