Their Story

Remembering Shawn M. Davies.

A Beaver County soldier who died in Iraq of cardiac arrest was buried Saturday as friends and relatives remembered him as a friend, son, fiance and soldier.

Spc. Shawn Davies, 22, of Hopewell Township, died July 8 after he fell over and stopped breathing at a recreation facility near Baghdad. Previous medical checkups had revealed no problems, relatives said. The Army is investigating.

That Davies didn’t die in combat doesn’t diminish his contribution to the effort in Iraq or lessen the grief his loved ones feel, said Brig. Gen. Robert E. Durbin.

Durbin presented Davies’ parents, Ron and Martha Davies, with a Bronze Star, a Commendation Medal and a Good Conduct Medal for their son’s service. Later they were given the flag that draped Davies’ casket during the funeral.

Davies joined the Army in 2002 and was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
