Remembering Shawn M. Dunkin.
Sergeant Shawn Micheal Dunkin was born on February 27, 1981, and grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Army in January 2001, at nineteen.
Shawn was a cavalry scout, the soldier sent out ahead of the formation to find what is there and report it back. He first served in Iraq in 2003. He returned with B Troop, 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, out of Fort Drum, New York.
He died in Baghdad, Iraq, on February 19, 2007. He was twenty-five, eight days short of his twenty-sixth birthday.
His bracelet carries the words his mother chose, the same two words cut into his headstone. Scouts Out.
